Hmmm. Where do I begin?
I read this book over the holidays. It was sitting on my shelf and I just grabbed it thinking this should be a nice read on the plane. Now, I wonder how it made it onto my shelf. It came via PaperBackSwap for sure but why did I request it and who recommended it to me?
This is a story of stories intermingled into one of a Southern family and their secrets. I was probably intrigued by the promise of suspense and mystery. That it was, but it was also sordid, miserable, tragic, depressing, and nasty. Murder, rape, incest, voodoo, down low homosexuality, war, drugs, suicide, prostitution, gossip, adultery, ignorance, transgenderism, arson…it didn’t stop!
Ugh! I’m not saying the book is bad. As much as I was disgusted I couldn’t help but turn the page. But I guess this is a case where I should have read the reviews. My soul is so tired from being violated by my choice of reads lately; I just really need something light and uplifting.
