Barbados, A Seniors Paradise

February 4, 2011 by KChie 3 Comments

…or so it seems. Unfair, I know but everywhere I turn I’m bombarded by old white retirees. I haven’t watched an official Bajan tourism video but methinks they need to do a better job at attracting the younger folks…or maybe I’m just an old soul preferring activities that they would partake in.

Speaking of the elderly, I once took care of a man hitting 70 years of age who needed to be sent to a nursing home for continued physical therapy. I almost laughed out loud when he lamented that he didn’t want to be around all those elderly people. It made me wonder, when does elderly start? Eighty?!

That said, my first full day here I met a wonderful older woman (maybe my mothers age so young in comparison to some others here) from Canada who’s married to a Trinidadian and spends the winter here. She was very friendly and incorporated me into her party. I later ran into her on my last day while lounging at Dover Beach and she offered to come pick me up for the Oistins Fish Fry so that I wouldn’t have to take the public transportation at night. How considerate.

I don’t mean to rain on the parade of those older (and wiser as the saying goes) than I. Seeing them makes me wonder if my parents would ever take a vacation together, just the two of them, in the future. You know what I mean?

Not too long ago my mother was berating me, that I was too picky, that if someone pushes “a nice Nzema boy from a good family” in front of me I should give him a chance ie. Marry him so I can have kids as nothing is more important than your children and after all I could grow to love him. That just sounds all kinds of wrong to me. How am I going to walk off into the sunset on a Caribbean beach in my elderly years when all I have is a sperm-donor?

You missed the point…by the time you are in your elderly years (aka after your 30 something anniversary of your 28th year), he will no longer just be a sperm donor..he will be your nice nzema boy. Sounds like the kinda thing fit for a romance novel…written by a woman

THE PURPLE MANGO PANDEMONIUM

A lover of mangoes. A woman - smart, without pretense, lefthanded, Afropolitan - navigating this thing called life. An unapologetic believer in social justice and karma. Choosing to radiate positive energy and be true to myself. Here, my musings.
