Bajan Roots and Rhythms Show

The eve of the fourth anniversary of my 28th birthday was spent at The Plantation Theatre not far from where I was staying. Free alcohol (I had two rum punches and that was enough for me), a Bajan dinner (ok) with a live steel band playing while we ate, and a cultural show.

They started out with dances from Africa – their roots; from the north to the south; then paid a tribute to the cultures of the other Caribbean islands from which they had gleaned a number of traits from. Then we “cropped-over” in Barbados and paid a tribute to cultural ambassador Rihanna.

It was quite interactive. The audience was mostly old (retirees) and white (tourists) with the majority seemingly coming from Canada. They had birthday and wedding anniversary announcements, and competitions such as “name that tune” and limbo dances. At the end we all created a Conga line and danced to the last few songs. I enjoyed the fire-eater and could smell kerosene when he was on stage *yikes*; as well as the stilt walkers. But they were all impressive.

They delivered me home around 10 pm and I headed out to Red Rock Bar & Bistro which was nearby for Ladies Night about an hour later. What?! I had one pineapple daiquiri, watched the first part of Fulton – Newcastle then retired home. By that time, the place was crowded mostly by Bajans, mostly men, but there was hardly any dancing going on. What? Are these Bajans shy or something?
