Winter catches us unprepared in Johannesburg

June 16, 2010 by KChie Leave a Comment

Ivorian cousin called around 6am to tell me that he just received my many missed calls and text messages.  Somehow I didn’t believe him.  I clarified the address of his home with him getting all kinds of possible landmarks, closeby intersections, and nearby streets as well so that I was sure that someday I would return to my belongings!
With the help of a local driver the guys and myself were able to find the home and I went in for a quick change and warmer clothing. We were going to the Sandton FIFA Fan Fest to watch the Portugal – Ivory Coast game on the big screen for free.
It was so cold. Below freezing for sure not to mention  the windchill.  Ivory Coast could have played better especially given that we were freezing our behinds out for them.  The least they could have done was find the net instead of wildly throwing the ball around. The highlight of the match seemed to be when Drogba came onto the field sometime in the second half.  That warmed us up slightly.
After what seemed like an eternity waiting in the cold we got taxis to take us back to Mandela Square for a repeat of last night’s action.  However, the square was much quieter. That’s probably because the Brazilians were at Ellis Park stadium where their side was meeting North Korea.  We decided to skip the bar and found a nice African restaurant for dinner and football. I must say so far that South Africa is like a meat lovers dream vacation. It’s just meat, meat, and more meat on the menu!
In terms of the game, everybody was expecting a Brazilian smackdown on North Korea but surprisingly they defended themselves quite well until Brazil changed their tactics in the second half.  Still we cheered N. Korea.
Oh, I almost forgot.  While we were waiting for our meals, who should walk by but the great Roger Milla himself? At first we weren’t sure it was him, but it really was. We sent one of the ladies up to talk to him and he did agree to come over where we sang his praises…and got pictures!

Oh my goodness, this vacation is turning out to be the best decision ever!

THE PURPLE MANGO PANDEMONIUM

A lover of mangoes. A woman - smart, without pretense, lefthanded, Afropolitan - navigating this thing called life. An unapologetic believer in social justice and karma. Choosing to radiate positive energy and be true to myself. Here, my musings.
