This past weekend I met up with a young relative who is contemplating “going natural“. That is she wants to stop putting chemical relaxers in her hair. Many women of African heritage wear their hair in a chemically altered state. Many don’t even know what their natural texture looks like. I’ve worn my hair in it’s natural state for most of my life and I have officially sworn off the lye. What was sad about the discussion I had with my relative was that one of the things that held her back from realizing her goal was a comment from her parent to “please don’t do this” because “it’s not nice”.
Sad! That there are some of us who are embarassed and ashamed by how God made us. Someone needs to tune in to Sesame Street and take a clue from this dark skin curly haired puppet!
A lover of mangoes. A woman - smart, without pretense, lefthanded, Afropolitan - navigating this thing called life. An unapologetic believer in social justice and karma. Choosing to radiate positive energy and be true to myself. Here, my musings.
