Hurrah for Summer

June 5, 2011 by KChie Leave a Comment

Flowers on path to work

The calendar may not say June 21, but hurrah, it is finally summer! Yes, I’m ignoring the fact that the first 80F-plus weather day was followed by a 50F one.

It’s summer because I can finally walk to work without getting rained on and without my ears freezing off. It’s summer because the rabbits, skunks, butterflies, woodchucks, birds and sometimes ducks greet me during the glorious walk in which the sun basks my skin.  Alright then, fine, the woodchucks actually run away into their burrows but hey the fact that they are out means hibernation season is over! Alleluia!

Adorable skunk on path

It’s summer because the turkey buzzards circle around the hospital. Honestly, I see them nowhere else but on the ledges and windowsills at the hospital. It’s creepy if you think about it, how are patients supposed to believe they will get better with a vulture perched outside their windows?

Sunset over the lake from my porch

It’s summer because the sun doesn’t set until almost 9 pm. And when it does the sky over the lake displays shades of pink, purple, blue and yellow.  These sunsets never get old especially when I don’t have to get off my couch to see them. Even the thunderstorms rolling across the lakes are gorgeous.  Huge cumulonimbus clouds turning the sky dark and making the water angry and the occasional lightening shaking things up.  Gorgeous I say as long as I’m safely inside.

A praying mantis on my porch

It’s summer because from my porch I can see the yachts sailing by and listen to the live music from down on the bayfront. The bayfront is always there, true, but in summer it takes on a gorgeous appeal.

It’s summer because the birds sing to me while leaving their “gifts” on the porch. It’s summer because the roar of motorcyles says it is so and the classic cars (muscle cars especially) agree.

Cottonwood pollen on grass

And finally it’s summer because it has started to snow! Cottonwood fuzzy flurries that is. Thank goodness I don’t seem to have allergies to these.

It’s summer! It’s summer! It’s summer! Yay!
