Dining in Las Vegas

June 23, 2011 by KChie Leave a Comment

After the 3 beers the night before, Wednesday brought sleep, sleep, and sleep for my mother. I lounged around and used the Aria fitness center. Around 3pm she finally woke up. The plan for the day was dinner at Top of The World at the Stratosphere with a reservation at 7:30 pm in order to be able to catch the sun setting. I picked this restuarant because of the 360 views and not so much for the food as my mother is very critical with other people’s cooking, famous award-winning chef or not. I had a copy of their menu and had her look through for what she would order to, you know, save time at the restaurant. You know?!

I knew it would be far and I toyed with the idea of taking the bus or hiring a taxi, but we had done nothing all day so I thought we would walk. My mom agreed stating that at least we could watch the people around. She had been marveling at all the elderly people here walking about earlier.

Well, we left Aria around 5:40 pm.  Stratosphere came into our view by the time we reached Treasure Island and it had taken us about 50 minutes to get here. My mother was walking slow and she found the heat overwhelming. I on the other hand was basking. BASKING I SAY! I considered stopping for the Siren Show at Treasure Island and I’m so glad that we did not. Oh my goodness. Just because the Stratosphere was in view did not mean it was anywhere close!  We got to the Fashion Show Mall and I figured the Stratosphere was definitely close now so we would stop for a bit and peruse the aisles.  Would you know it? The closer we got to the Stratosphere, the further and faster we had to walk. Seriously.  I ended up calling for a 20 minute hold on the reservation but we finally made it and were seated by the window.

The sun was just about to set as planned. We gulped down our water, caught our breaths, and vowed that on the way back we were definitely taking a taxi or the bus. It was beautiful though. There had been a slight change in the menu requiring my mother to choose another entree but overall it was a good experience.  At a certain point in the rotation of the restuarant we saw the Insanity riders and the Skyjumpers.  We were so relaxed believe it or not, that going back WE WALKED the entire way stopping again for the Mirage Volcano and the Bellagio Fountains, reaching Aria around midnight. That my friend is about 6 miles/10 km roundtrip!  My mother offered to accompany me if I wanted to go out partying like everyone else seemed to be doing. Well that’s where I draw the line. I don’t go out dancing by myself, let alone with my mother! She’s too funny. I was ready to hit the sack!
