Chillin’ in Joberg

June 25, 2010 by KChie Leave a Comment

Thursday after the Ghana – Germany game, we woke up late and decided to meet up with my namesake in Montecasino. We had a nice outdoor lunch at Ciao Baby Cucina. The sun was blazing hot. Really nice. Even though namesake, 007 and myself went to the same junior high, namesake realized there that she was good friends with 007’s cousins. What a small world.

We tried to make it over to Midrand so I could meet up with another of our junior high classmates but we just missed him and ended up spending the afternoon with his wife instead. Rather, 007 and his Bond girl slept while I blogged…then woke up 007 with my shouts of shock as Slovakia proceeded to show Italy the way home!

We met up with the rest of the guys at Lekgotla in Mandela Square to watch Japan defeat Denmark and enjoy some good food again. At some point the discussion moved to transvestites and how female some of them looked especially in Thailand and the Philippines. We then went to Bassline in downtown Johannesburg for a reggae night. But not before we met up with two girls from Botswana studying in South Africa only to find out that one of them was a guy. What an odd coincidence.

At Bassline, we were met by folks outside openingly selling marijuana stating that it was legal to smoke it in South Africa. They were even inside the club meandering through the crowds and sticking joints in our faces. I met up with a friend from Botswana here who told me that it was NOT legal to sell, buy or smoke pot but police didn’t really bother the club because they had far worse crimes to address. I thought to myself, great, this could be that one time the police would come raid this Thursday night affair, because I’m here. When no-one came, my next thoughts were that I better do laundry before I leave South Africa because I didn’t want the stank of the pot (for the air was filled with it) on me. I even wondered if I could get high from all that smoke!

Overall, I had a good night.

THE PURPLE MANGO PANDEMONIUM

A lover of mangoes. A woman - smart, without pretense, lefthanded, Afropolitan - navigating this thing called life. An unapologetic believer in social justice and karma. Choosing to radiate positive energy and be true to myself. Here, my musings.
